Teaching Philosophy:

Fall of 2003 I completed a Fulbright Scholar appointment in central Siberia of the Russian Federation. You see me here with some of my ESSTU colleagues at the Yurta, an ethnic Buryat restaurant with two main attached yurtas and several others (one behind us) used only in summer.

This experience has greatly enriched every aspect of my work. In my teaching approach I emphasize focused reflection and integration of course material with experience. Service-learning projects are often part of my courses, requiring students to interact with the community and providing a real-time opportunity to use course material. My final exams ask students to incorporate learning from across the semester into reflection on a larger question directly related to course content, and to explore how they will use in their lives what they learned in the course. An adult student in my Leadership on-line course said, "We have been confronted with an action learning module that allows us to reflect on our work history, current workplace and future possibilities."
Education:

We start here with a photo of Zoia outside the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg on December 22, 2004.

  • University of Minnesota, Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN. 1995. Doctor of Philosophy in Education, focus in Training and Organization Development with honors
  • University of Montana, Missoula, MT. 1981. Master of Public Administration
  • University of Minnesota, Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN, 1974. Bachelor of Science in Political Science Secondary Education
Away from Work:

In fall 2003 I held a Fulbright appointment in the Buryat Republic of eastern Siberia. The western border of the Buryat Republic is Lk. Baikal, the largest body of fresh water in the world. Here you see my daughter Zoia coming down one of the oh-so-fun ice slides they erect in winter. (It's a very long season!)

I've lived in rural British Columbia, western Montana, northern Minnesota, southern Indiana, in Minneapolis and St. Paul, and along the Mississippi River before moving to Menomonie. I adopted my daughter Zoia from Buryatia in January of 1998 when she was 7 months old.

Zoia is Buryat, a member of the indigenous Asian peoples of this region. This is a fascinating area and these are wonderful welcoming people. Buryatia is one of the "autonomous republics" of Russia; it is bordered on the south by Mongolia, and on the northwest by Lake Baikal, a sacred place revered here as the birthplace of the world.

Buryat culture is much like that of Mongolia. Spirituality, this region is an intersection of Russian Orthodox, Buddhism and Shamanism. Sheep and horses are central to the traditionally nomadic Buryat culture. They provide food, clothing, shelter and art media.

The traditional Siberian home, the izba, is a simple square wooden structure usually with brightly painted shutters. The shutters are closed at night for warmth. The other common housing is the gray poured concrete apartment buildings of Stalin's era.

Two great books I've read recently on Siberia are The Conquest of a Continent by Lincoln, and Open Lands by Taplin. The first is a comprehensive history of Siberia; the second discusses areas of Siberia previously closed to westerners.

Zoia and I enjoy doing lots of things together, like tending our flowers, riding bike and swimming. I also watercolor paint though find I have way too little time for it.
