My educational philosophy is that the curriculum taught serves as a strong basis for the goals and activities that students will inevitably pursue throughout their lives.  I incorporate learning activities that bridge the gap between simply knowing the course objectives and actually being able to apply the knowledge towards actual experiences.  I do this through cooperative learning, utilizing learners past experiences, applying curriculum to case studies, and brining in subject matter experts to the learning environment.  Student’s knowledge of the course content is best measured when applied to actual experiences and situations that occur.  My grading system, therefore, reflects the students’ ability to apply the knowledge rather than simply knowing the information.

Des Moines 2004 Marathon

The picture to the right was taken directly after running the 2004 Des Moines, Iowa Marathon. I ran my first marathon in May of 2002 and vowed afterward that I would never do another one.  Since that first one I have completed over a dozen additional marathons.  The best part about them is exploring other communities.

When I’m able to get free time I enjoy spending time outdoors.  Skiing (both Nordic and down hill), canoeing, camping, rollerblading, and hiking are enjoyable pastimes.
