Introduction                                                                               

Intellectual Property on the Internet creates new laws and regulations to keep up with the abuse of the new technology.  Protecting intellectual property on the Internet is a concern that has evolved from the new technology.  New terms and different uses for words arise from the new problems and technology.  The following are definitions to the terms that are used when dealing with the topic of protecting intellectual property on the Internet.

Definition of Terms

audio

acoustic, mechanical, or electrical frequencies corresponding to normally audible sound waves which are of frequencies approximately from 15 to 20,000 hertz

commercialization

 

includes protecting, managing and developing the commercial value of IP and research, most commonly through the creation of linkages with industry and the creation of commercial enterprises linked by formal legal agreements

cybersquatting

the act of registering a popular Internet address, usually a company name, with the intent of selling it to its rightful owner

data compression

story data in a format that requires less space than usual, compressing data is the same as packing information

digital watermarking

pattern of bits inserted into a digital image, audio or video file that identifies the file's copyright information (author, rights, etc)

domain names

complete and absolute ownership of an internet label and internet address

graphics 

the process whereby a computer displays graphics on a CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) and an operator can manipulate them

Intellectual Property (IP)

includes any discovery or other material whether capable of protection by way of patents, trademarks, copyright, circuit layouts, plant varieties, trade practices, and design legislation or not. IP also includes, where relevant, goodwill, know-how and confidential information

quantum meric 

if you performed a service or provided a product for someone without a formal contract, but under circumstances reasonably indicating they wanted it from you, you are entitled to the value of the product or service, because they gained at your expense

sound recording

device which produces sounds, such as cassette, record, or cd player; used to protect website infringement by acting as an alarm

TechSource 

 

an electronic patent system which holds the scanned images of over 1.3 million patent documents dating back to 1920 and the text version of the documents from 1978

video

recording of a motion picture or television program for playing through visual output (monitor)

World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)

international organization dedicated to promoting the use and protection of works of the human spirit
