Elbert's interest in the field of risk control is focused on promoting the integration of safety, health, and environmental affairs into the normal management system. It is his belief that if American businesses are going to be competitive within the global market place they must capitalize on the potential cost saving associated with managing risk. Elbert's interests have been cultivated as a result of his professional work experiences. He has worked in several different capacities in various manufacturing environments and also as a loss control consultant in the insurance industry.
Since his tenure began at UW- Stout, it has been his goal to share with his students the potential organizational opportunities related to the effective management of safety, health and environmental affairs. He attempts to accomplish this by bringing real life situations into the classroom, coupled with theoretical models and finally challenging students to delve into the literature surrounding the fields. It is his belief that these methods, coupled with other class activities, foster a learning environment where students are able to exercise critical thinking, thus preparing them for professional positions in the field of risk control.
